Our Food // Featuring the largest outdoor seating area in Old City, and Philadelphia's Best Sunday Brunch, Gigi specializes in a unique version of International cuisine and tapas (sharing plates). American, French, Spanish, and Thai are just a sampling of the tastes one will find at Gigi.

    Tapas are a wide variety of appetizers that may be served cold or warm. In select bars in Spain, tapas have evolved into an entire sophisticated cuisine.

    The word "tapas" is derived from the Spanish verb tapar, "to cover". In some countries it is customary for diners to stand and move about while eating tapas.

    The serving of tapas is designed to encourage conversation because people are not so focused upon eating an entire meal that is set before them.

    Since one would be standing while eating a tapa, they would need to place their plates on top of their drinks to eat, creating a cover, hence the name tapas.

    Brunch is a meal eaten in the middle of the morning as a substitute for both breakfast and lunch. The word is a portmanteau of those two words.

    Brunch became popular in the US in the 1930's, because movie stars, celebrities, and the wealthy who were taking transcontinental train rides stopped off in Chicago between trains for a late morning meal.

    Humans have been consuming alcohol as far back as 3,000 BC. In the 16th century it was more common to drink beer or wine than water, because the alcohol ensured it was safe to drink.

    Dessert is a course that typically comes at the end of a meal, usually consisting of sweet food. The word comes from Old French desservir, "to clear the table" and "to serve."
